The TWIC (Transportation Worker Identification Credential) program provides a tamper-resistant biometric credential to maritime workers requiring unescorted access to secure areas of port facilities, outer continental shelf facilities, and vessels regulated under the Maritime Transportation Security Act (MTSA), and all U.S. Coast Guard credentialed merchant mariners. All mariners are required to hold a TWIC by April 15, 2009.

Skim the “Table of Contents” of an issue to find what is happening, will happen or has happened, for instance, in the Department of Homeland Security, the department primarily concerned with maritime matters. |

US Code Title 46 -- Shipping Parts A through J pertain to the mariner. These laws have been generated in large part for the protection of seamen and it is the expectation, if not the reality, that seamen should be familiar with their rights and responsibilities.
